The Community Service Awards program acknowledges the generosity of broadcasters but also recognizes the creativity in developing a successful public service campaign. There are many equally worthy causes and it is very difficult to create a perfect campaign to encourage people to action.
Entries are open to all member stations and must be received by Friday, October 19, 2012. Campaigns must have run between September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012. Winning stations will be contacted the week of October 22 and winning names will be released November 6. Awards will be presented during the OAB Gala Awards Dinner along with the OAB Hall of Fame and the Ontario Broadcast Order of Achievement. Enter today at www.oab.ca!
The OAB Hall of Fame will now replace the OAB Lifetime Achievement Award. Previously, the CAB honoured broadcasters into the Hall of Fame at their national conference. This award will now continue to honour excellence at the regional level. The criteria were developed in conjunction with associations across Canada to provide a national framework for unified broadcast awards. This board nominated honour is presented to individuals who spent most of their careers working for private broadcasters and demonstrated a commitment to the highest standards of broadcast excellence. This year the OAB is proud to induct Peter and Tony Viner into the OAB Ontario Hall of Fame.
Before retiring in 2007, Peter Viner was President and CEO of Canwest Mediaworks. Peter put retirement on hold for a period, and returned to broadcasting as interim President, Canwest Global, Broadcasting.
As the President and Chief Executive Officer of Rogers Media Inc., before retiring Tony was responsible for the Rogers Radio Group, OMNI Television, Rogers Publishing, Rogers Sportsnet and the Shopping Channel (TSC).
The Broadcast Order of Achievement will replace the CAB’s quarter/half century club. There are three levels of recognition, Bronze for 10-14 years of service, Silver for 15-24 years of service and Gold for 25+ years of service. Applicants have the option of attending the OAB Gala Awards Dinner where they will be presented with their certificates. Persons wishing to be recognized for their tenure in broadcasting may do so by applying on-line at www.oab.ca where forms are available.
This is the first year the OAB will be presenting the Ontario Broadcast Order of Achievement and OAB Hall of Fame awards. Other regional Associations across the country have agreed to continue these long standing traditions of broadcasting. Presentations will take place at each Association’s award dinner.
The Annual Gala Award Dinner will be held on Tuesday, November 6th, 2012, immediately following the OAB fall conference. It will be held at the Westin Bristol Place Hotel, 950 Dixon Road in Toronto beginning with a reception at 5:30 p.m.
